Well-positioned in Australia's sugar industry, Ayr is a rural town in the state of Queensland. Situated on the north side of the Burdekin River, the community is located 1,270 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, the state capital. It is named after the Scottish town of Ayr, birthplace of Sir Thomas McIlwraith, former Premier of Queensland. It has an estimated population of 8,616 residents.

The community of Ayr, which is the main town in the Local Government Area of the Burdekin Shire, is part of the State District of Burdekin (in the Queensland Legislative Assembly) and the Federal Division of Dawson (in the Australian House of Representatives). It was declared a town in 1882 and became a shire in 1903. Today, it is said to be built on liquid gold because of the underground aquifer supplied by the Burdekin Falls Dam.

Thanks to a rich network of creeks and mangrove-lined estuaries, Ayr's immediate area is considered by enthusiasts as a prime location for fishing and crabbing. Also, the wetlands in the Burdekin area make it a bird-watching hotspot.

Athletes of various levels of experience and skill also have something to look forward to in the town of Ayr. Sporting activities hosted by the community include golf, netball, rugby, soccer, table tennis, tennis, and touch football.

Known as the silver link, the Burdekin Bridge was Australia's longest bridge for many years. Today, it is the district's most popular landmark.
